Hitting a High Note

Even though Hurricane Harvey displaced the HGO from its home in the Wortham, patrons and staff found much to celebrate at this year’s Opera Ball. Held at the impossibly glam Post Oak Hotel, the white-tie event channeled Old-Hollywood style, with a ballroom that recalled a swanky supper club on Sunset Boulevard. The Encore after-party continued well into the night, and included a Champagne toast, specialty cocktails dubbed “Fred” and “Ginger,” and plenty of dancing. The night raised more than $1.25 million.

What year was your organization launched? 1938

What is your mission? March of Dimes was founded in 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, to combat polio. The name “March of Dimes” was suggested by entertainer Eddie Cantor as a way to encourage people to donate even a small amount, like a dime, to help fight polio.
