Offering New Membership Plan, Media Systems Says Keeping Tech Simple Is Secret to 40-Year Success

Donnie & Jaclyn Boutwell

WHAT'S THE SECRET to running a successful business in such times as these? We think that the key to running a successful business in difficult times is the same as anytime. Stay on your mission and be authentic! Years ago, we challenged ourselves to come up with a mission statement that helps us to define why we do what we do. It keeps us focused, keeps us on task, and keeps our minds in the right place no matter what is going on in the world. Our mission is simple: We believe that technology in the home should be easy to use, beautifully designed, and unbelievably reliable. That’s it! Our purpose and mission are timeless and we can adapt those goals to any circumstances.

What’s unique about your approach? Much of the technology world is geared toward adding features and options. We are intentionally designing systems that are simple. We want to get to know you and create an environment that lends itself to easy habits. We want to create as much convenience and capability with as little fuss as possible. Keeping technology simple makes it useable and adds peace to your home.

What’s special about your team? We’re a family business that has been around for more than 40 years. We are extremely cautious about protecting our work environment. Job satisfaction is more tied to the people you work with than the work that you do. We know that, and we work hard to make sure that our team stays close. Connection, communication, mutual respect and kindness are paramount to our amazing work culture. A lot of times you can even catch our guys working out or hunting together on the weekends. We’re a really fun — and funny — group! A lot of times Jaclyn will say, “Can we please have our own TV show?” because she thinks we would provide some comedic relief to anyone watching at home.

Who or what inspires you as you seek to reach greater heights of success? Steve Driskell is Donnie’s uncle and the founder of Media Systems. His vision for the future, attention to detail, and attitude toward efficiency has shaped the way we work. Since he has retired, he continues to be an encouragement to us, and the one that we want to impress with the quality of work that we provide.

What have you learned about your business and your community that might inspire others? Relationships are the key to long-term success. Customer retention is always the objective. Donnie came up with a new mantra in 2021 that is further shaping our mission and goal as a company: “If you focus your business on service, you’ll always have plenty of projects.” We are experts at new construction, but providing the best service in the industry keeps us busy no matter what is happening in the world.

What’s new for 2022 that you’re excited about? Membership Services! We are signing homeowners up on several different membership plans that provide custom-tailored levels of service. Some homeowners are very hands-on with home technology. Some don’t want to touch a thing! Membership services provide proactive maintenance, discount pricing, free remote management, extended hours and priority scheduling.

WHAT IS THE secret to running a successful business? The secret to a successful business is a rockstar team. With a rockstar team, clients experience the transformation within their culture. This also is connected to other success factors — a commitment to relentless change, communicating courageously, and collaborating to win. The ultimate goal is to be the change for our clients and to create a culture where team members thrive and grow exponentially.
