Three Ways to Eat and Drink for a Cause This Month

HOUSTONIANS CAN ALL agree on two things: Our city has some of the best food and drink options in the country, and those who live here are pros at rallying around communities in need. This month, several local food and drink events are serving up opportunities to give back.

After Hope Farms, Recipe for Success' seven-acre urban farm, was robbed, Le Colonial stepped up. From now until Jan. 31, the restaurant plans to donate $1 from every special prix-fixe lunch or dinner menu directly to Hope Farms and Recipe for Success Foundation. "We have been honored to partner with Recipe for Success and Hope Farms in a number of their events and campaigns since we opened in Houston," stated Le Colonial's Director of Operations, Martin Theis. "Their organization's mission is incredibly important to the youth and our city, so when we received the news that they were victimized in such a monumental way, we were quick to jump to support in the best way we know how – inviting our diners to enjoy our cuisine." Each three-course menu consists of a mouth-watering selection of signature dishes and specials.

The fifth annual Hops n' Hot Sauce Festival is slated to take place at SpindleTap Brewery on Jan. 9, from 11am-6pm. The piping-hot-ticket event garnered $4,000 in 2020 for Addi's Faith Foundation — which raises funds for childhood cancer research and offers financial and emotional support to families — through a silent auction and a portion of ticket proceeds. This year's event will feature events such as the annual hot-pepper-eating contest and a spicy-pizza-eating challenge, and will also have plenty of activities to keep folks busy between bites. Get your tickets today.

Philanthropic juices will be flowing next Saturday, Jan. 16, at the brand-new JuiceLand Bellaire outpost. The sixth Houston location will be donating 100 percent of sales to theSouthern Smoke Foundation, Chris Shepherd's charity that provides assistance for those in the food and beverage industry across the nation. "We're so inspired by the efforts of the Southern Smoke Foundation, and wanted to use the grand opening of our new shop as an opportunity to celebrate them and contribute to the cause," said JuiceLand founder and owner Matt Shook. Swing by the Bellaire Town Center at 5103 Bellaire Blvd. to pick up a juice, smoothie or bowl to give back to a good cause. Need more incentive? Your purchase comes along with a free fanny pack — and one lucky customer will win half-off JuiceLand drinks for a year!

THIS SUMMER, LEBRINA Jackson, owner of Escape Spa in Cypress, is taking her wisdom and joie de wellness to the jungle. Far beyond the walls of her beautiful spa, she’s aiming to create a quiet space for people to work on their personal growth in a community-centric atmosphere. She shares what participants will get out of the trip and why it’s important to take time for self-care in 2025.

Why is it important for people to “retreat”? Life can feel like a non-stop marathon, and sometimes we forget to just... breathe. Retreating offers a chance to step off the treadmill for a bit and hit the reset button. It's about giving your body and mind some much-needed TLC, allowing for genuine relaxation and rejuvenation. Beyond the personal perks, retreats often create a cool sense of community, connecting you with others on a similar path. By carving out space for self-reflection, you can recharge and return to your daily life with a clearer head and a bit more pep in your step.
