Supporters of the Junior League of Houston gathered to celebrate the organization at its 70th annual Charity Ball, this year inspired by all things France — from the Paris lights to the glamour of Versailles. The weekend raised $800,000. … The Good Samaritan Foundation also toasted a milestone anniversary during its 30th Pearl Ball, held at the River Oaks Country Club. Foundation chairman Jason Fertitta thanked guests for their support of nurse education and training. … And Lester and Sue Smith surprised attendees of the Seven Acres Jewish Care Services’ 75th annual gala with a $1 million contribution to the facility’s Harvey recovery efforts — and an additional $1 million through a matching grant.

What year was your organization launched? 1938

What is your mission? March of Dimes was founded in 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, to combat polio. The name “March of Dimes” was suggested by entertainer Eddie Cantor as a way to encourage people to donate even a small amount, like a dime, to help fight polio.

THE ALWAYS MEMORABLE Alley Theatre ball took on special significance this year, becoming not just a sexy Post Oak Hotel soiree — with “A Buenos Aires Affair” as the theme, nodding to the company’s production of Noël Coward’s Private Lives — but also an emotional sendoff to retiring longtime Managing Director Dean Gladden. It raised $1.3 million to boot.
