The vibe was Cali-cool at the annual Evening in the Park gala. The weather cooperated, and more than 500 patrons turned up to the Hermann Park Conservancy’s California Dreaming-themed event, this year chaired by Bonner and George Ball, Janet Gurwitch and Ron Franklin, and Dancie and Jim Ware. The open-air dinner overlooked McGovern Lake, and H-E-B prez Scott McClelland was honored for his contributions to the park and to the community.

AS HOUSTON SLOWLY recovers from last week’s severe derecho, it is strangely serendipitous that on May 25 and 26, a little over a week after that unexpected drama, the Houston Symphony will perform composer John Adams’ critically acclaimed Nativity oratorio El Niño, named after the 1997 meteorological phenomenon and precursor to what we now refer to as “weird weather.”
