Mercury Orchestra Blasts Off, with Fun Retro-Space-Age Gala and Supporters Like Lynn Wyatt

ONE OF HOUSTON'S most prestigious performing arts organizations, the Mercury orchestra, threw a fabulous “Retro-Futuristic” gala at the Post Oak Hotel, complete with a space-themed musical presentation and a top-tier guest list including Lynn Wyatt.

“I’M INTERESTED IN the things left behind,” explains found-object and performance-based installation artist Viktor Givens, whose lovingly crafted installation Coffee/Kool Aid and the Tabernacle of (Re)Memory is on view through April 23 at Community Artists’ Collective.

While working as an exec at Saks Fifth Avenue, homeowner Schaefer channeled a previous gig as a surfboard designer in Australia, dividing the Saks logo into 64 pieces and using them graphically on surfboards sold at the department stores. One of the boards adds a sculptural accent in the media room.

I LEFT A notecard for my neighbor, Terron Schaefer, whom I’d never met, asking if I could sneak a look at the house in my neighborhood in Sugar Land that he’d been reconstructing for nearly three years. This was no simple remodel, and, with its starkly contemporary exterior shape, newly paneled with horizontal driftwood-gray cedar planks, it was not looking like any other home in the subdivision. It was a lotus blooming in the desert.
