THIS WEEKEND BRINGS the long-awaited debut of The Pilot Dance Project’s Queer Fringe Houston. The inaugural event, a celebration of LGBTQIA+ performance art and activism, was planned more than two years ago, but presenters are just now lifting the curtain due to (you guessed it!) the pandemic. Taking place at MATCH, events on Friday and Sunday are wonderfully complementary to the city’s official Pride parade on Saturday.

'Round Midnight'

ON JUNE 4, the annual Jazz on Film series returns to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston for three weekends of screenings. Curated by Peter Lucas, this year’s program covers a lot of ground stylistically. It’s also a great reminder of the historical importance and ongoing influence of this music, as well as its deep connection to other artistic mediums. (Not to mention a perfect way to keep cool this summer!)

Vivian in 'Moxie'

PUNK ROCK AND the spirit of community art-making and activism is alive and kicking thanks to The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, a Houston institution described by the very un-punk GQ Magazine as a “temple for outsider art.” On Saturday, May 14, The Orange Show presents the first public screening of the comedy-drama coming-of-age film Moxie, directed by Amy Poehler, and based on the book of the same name by beloved Houston young adult author and former “riot grrrl” Jennifer Mathieu. The multidisciplinary event also includes live music and a visual-art workshop.
